Stallion Services

Semen Collection

Semen collection is performed with safety and the stallion’s comfort as top priorities. Proper collection techniques and calm handling are essential for consistent semen quality and a positive experience for the stallion.

⸻

Collection Process

Stallions are collected using established, industry-standard procedures in a controlled environment. Each collection is managed by experienced personnel and conducted at a pace that supports both safety and optimal results.

Immediately following collection, semen is evaluated for motility and concentration. Based on the intended use, semen may be prepared for fresh use, cooling, or shipment, using appropriate extenders designed to support viability and fertility.

⸻

Scheduling & Frequency

Collection schedules are coordinated in advance to align with mare ovulation timing or shipping requirements. Some stallions may be collected on a routine schedule, while others are collected on an as-needed basis depending on breeding plans and semen quality.

For certain stallions or breeding situations, more frequent collections may be recommended to maintain consistency and performance.

⸻

Stallion Requirements

Stallions must arrive with current health records, including required vaccinations and a negative Coggins. A current EVA test may also be required depending on collection and shipment needs.

Owners are asked to disclose any known behavioral concerns or special handling requirements prior to arrival to ensure a safe and successful experience.

Freezing Semen

Frozen semen results can vary widely between stallions. Some stallions freeze exceptionally well and maintain good semen quality after thawing, while others experience a significant drop in viability. Because of this variation, semen freezing is approached as a carefully evaluated, step-by-step process.

⸻

Test Freezing & Evaluation

The freezing process begins with a test freeze. Semen is collected and evaluated for volume, concentration, motility, and morphology. If initial quality is suitable, the semen enters the freezing trial phase.

Multiple freezing extenders and techniques may be tested to determine which combination produces the best post-thaw results for that individual stallion. Semen is processed to separate the sperm cells from the rest of the ejaculate, then re-diluted using specialized freezing extenders before being packaged into straws.

Sample straws from each extender and method are thawed and evaluated so results can be compared. If post-thaw quality is acceptable, additional collections may be scheduled to build frozen inventory. If results are suboptimal, adjustments may be made and the semen re-evaluated.

⸻

What to Expect

• Not all stallions are good candidates for frozen semen

• Results are highly individual and cannot be guaranteed

• Some stallions may perform better with fresh or cooled semen instead

• A single collection can yield multiple frozen doses, depending on semen quality

Freezing protocols are adjusted as needed to give each stallion the best possible chance of success.

⸻

Quality & Storage

Frozen semen is handled using established industry standards and stored appropriately to preserve long-term viability. Semen storage and future distribution options can be discussed based on the stallion owner’s needs and breeding goals.

Phantom Training for Stallions

Last Resort Stallion Station offers limited phantom training for stallions being prepared for semen collection. Availability is limited, so advance scheduling is recommended.

Most stallions are able to complete phantom training within one to three days, depending on the individual stallion’s temperament, experience, and libido. Training sessions are conducted in a controlled, low-stress environment and typically last approximately one hour.

Semen collection and evaluation may be performed in conjunction with training sessions upon request. Our goal is to help stallions become comfortable and confident with the collection process while prioritizing safety for both horses and handlers.

Stallions new to the collection process must be introduced to the phantom and other tools used for collection, which can take time and patience. We work at their pace and try to ensure a positive and successful experience so that they can produce the highest quality of semen that they can.

Contact us to discuss phantom training availability or to determine whether your stallion is a good candidate.
